Title: Booting from CD on black hardware...
Post by: nextfanatic on January 03, 2008, 01:53:58 pm
Can anyone clarify whether or not booting is supported on black hardware? I've seen postings that say the 1991 version 2.4 release 65 ROM supported booting from CD, and then other messages that say, that is true, with conditions. Since the CD-ROM for black hardware supports ISO 9660, I assume the black ROM supports booting from a floppy image on the CD, ala el torito, although admittedly before its time. Can anyone provide some details so I can make my own bootable CDs for black?

peace

I have never tested booting from CD but there was an issue that your CD-ROM needs a Jumper wich can switch from 2048 Bytes sectorlenght to 512 Bytes

Do you know where I can find details about the Next ROM? Did it utilize a floppy vector to boot from a CD with a floppy image ala El Torito? If so, we could somewhat easily make bootable CDs right?

Thanks!

NeXT computers with the turbo chipset (those with four main memory slots) can boot directly off of some SCSI CD or DVD drives if the machine has a v74 ROM.  Turbo's with older ROMs and non-turbo machines can use a boot floppy to load the code necessary to access the CDROM.  The latest ROM for non-turbo 68040 machines (v66) can't boot directly from a CD.  Also, 68030 NeXTcubes can't boot directly from a CD either.

There's some good information about the NeXT boot process near the bottom of this post:

I don't know if CD's using the El Torito specification (http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Projects/CD-ROM/El_Torito_CD-ROM_Spec.pdf) are compatible with Black Hardware or not.  I'm guessing that they probably wouldn't work, but it's worth a try.

Nitro,

How do they boot directly off the CD ROM? Did the ROMs have routines specifically for booting from CD? I thought that because ISO 9660 format CD-ROMS never utilized the boot area, the ROM would have to use some sort of floppy routine to place an image on the CD-ROM ala el torito...sounds like I am way off base here...thanks for the info and I welcome any other comments or suggestions!

PS: Does anyone know where I can find  technical details or specifications for  the black firmware? that would be the easiest way to figure out exactly what the boot sequence is doing and clue us in how to make our own  bootable CDs...

cheers

AFAIK, only the v74 ROM contains code to boot directly off of the CDROM.  I tried to boot a turbo Cube from a CDROM with a v73 ROM and it was a no-go.  I swapped in a v74 ROM and it booted right up.  As for the CD format, I believe they're ISO 9660 with Rockridge extensions.

I don't know much about the original firmware.  I know how to modify the MAC address and calculate a new checksum so that a new EPROM can be burned, but that's about it. I don't have any of the factory firmware documentation, unfortunately.

What CD did you use to boot directly off of? Perhaps I can find a copy of one and inspect to CD to see exactly where the boot code resides and in what form...thanks for the help

The NEXTSTEP 3.3 user (install) CD is bootable directly from the CDROM.  Not all drives will boot directly, so you may need to try a few different ones.  I've been able to boot from a Plextor CDROM (PX-20TS), and a Pioneer DVDROM (DVD-305S).
