I was able to get Front Row working yesterday on the first gen 12 inch powerbook (867mgz) that has a video chipset not supported by core animation.
I did this with FrontRowUpdate1.3.1.pkg, osx 10.4.11 and the Activate frontrow app. (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/26625/activate-front-row)
I couldnt get the Front row to install so I opened the package, went into the resources and found the binary and dragged to to my desktop. (one file)
I then ran the activate front row app, restarted and it worked!
I *think* you have to have a g4 for front row to work.
