I saw this post and wondered how to fix my cube MO drive.  Unfortunately when I powered it up I messed up and left the power cable on the MO drive and a brief puff of smoke came out.  What is needed to fix?

Thanks,
Eric

I've got the largest private prototype Apple collection in the world. He's the only guy I would send ANYTHING to. He is also the guy who Rob, from Black Hole Inc send all his boards, and MO drives.

I think he will recap a NeXT MO drive for $80 with return shipping. You can't beat that, period.

Drive is model no. N3000
256 megabyte optical drive.

Have it apart and the burning smell is by the the power connector.

How to you insert images to this thread?  Without putting it on a website??

Can you just attach?

Hello Eric:
Here is the really long thread on how to repair NeXT optical drives http://www.nextcomputers.org/forums/index.php?topic=922.0

As for Charles at maccaps , it can be hit and miss especially on turnaround times, so that is an outdated quote :)
I've had Matt here locally doing caps for me for ove 4 years which is great.
He does not do Optical Drive Caps, I had Charles do Optical Drive Caps and I recall it was $95 and I had mixed results because it is not always just the caps

I think I advised unplugging the optical drive , the blue of smoke probably was the motor.

This is the document you seek:

Welcome to the forums! Great doing business with you as well.

Okay - Ordered the caps from Mouser.

1) Does anyone sell or swap working drives?
2) Does anyone have additional media for the drives?

Thanks,
Eric

Found the issue with the smoke.  Look at the cap that went bad.  I don't know its value but I am assuming that it is a C105 since lots of them around the board.

Hi Eric,

I have already successfully refurbished 3 units, two of them currently installed in a pretty tricky dual MO drive + SCSI2SD drive in my 030 Cube. In those units I only recapped the motor board, the rest was fine.
I replaced the electrolytic caps with solide state ones (ceramic). Each unit did successfully pass more than one stress test (building NeXTStep 3.3 image, which may easily take one night or more) before going in the Cube.
I'm planning to refurbish another unit I got right today from Rob, documenting the whole process with better pics and more details than those available around.
Will take some time though...

Eric

That is great. Can you send some steps since I tried on my old MO drive to desolder one of those green caps and it was not easy. I was not looking forward to doing them all.

I wish I could ship you the drive and pay you to do it. Are you offering that service?  If not any feedback would be great. Thanks!! Eric

Eric

Soldered out those damm green caps!!  They were a mess.  The board is very messy and I will be cleaning and scrubbing it with isopropyl alcohol tonight.  I hope this works if not I did try.

Eric

Well, the drive board is DEAD!  I put the new caps in blew out the board and put it back together.  Plugged it in to an extra power supply that is good (had a old drive plugged in as well, it it spins up no problem) and then smoke started to come out of the top of the daughter board.  Unplugged it and then looked at the damage.  The area around the surface mount caps/resistors is burnt up.  The drive is done.  I zipped it up in a body bag and plan to give it a nice funeral!

Help!!
