Okay, i bought NeXTSTEP 3.3 Intel on ebay. Both floppies and CD. Would installing it on my PC be the same as using an emulator? Or is there some steps to take? Thanks, bye.

yeah the steps would pretty much be the same as an emulator....

I just put a 320 GB disk in my white box (if only it'd use it all......). But there was a jumper setting to knock it down to 32gb ....

Otherwise, nothing much else to expect, video/sound/network cards will be the 'hard part' to track down...

There is no VESA for us NS 3.3 users..

sorry it took so long, I was waiting for the package to come in. Anyway it boots of the install disk fine, but when it asks for the drivers disk, I get this:

loading binary for ps2keyboard driver
Reading configuration file '/private/drivers/i386/ps2keyboard.config/default.table'.
Loading binary for EISABus device driver
Biosread error 0x10 @ 2124, C:59 h:0 s:0

And it repeats that 3 times and says error loading EISABus. It does the same for PCIBus driver then it says bn 1098: directory read error. Then it just hangs.

What can I do?
Thanks.

huh, I've never seen that. Do you know what your actual chipset is? 440bx, i810, etc etc?

It's i820... Do you think the BIOS is too new? It's creation was in 1999....

Thanks.

Oh, and the error happens while it's loading the core drivers.

It's a custom PC... no particular brand. It's in an Accel microsystems case, but it's custom.

UPDATE------ I took out the ethernet and sound cards, which got rid of the PCIBus error, however there is still the ESIABus error. This continues to the the "Searching for drivers" screen. But has the same BIOSread error.

Ideas?

Check your BIOS version. If it's old, update (flash) the BIOS to the latest greatest revision.

That didn't help NEXTSTEP load either. Do you think the disk is corrupted? I was thinking of downloading the disk image for the drivers from apple, but my mac can't read the '.floppyimage' format. Not even if i change the extension to .img, or .image. How can i make a floppy of those images?

Would using the dd command in Terminal work?

Thanks.

I created my Openstep boot floppies in Windows XP using this program:
http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite

if you do not have windows, then it may be possible to use mac os x and the 'dd' command although I've never tried it personally:

http://fixunix.com/powerpc/13479-mac-equivalent-rawrite-dd.html

I have to ask though: have you considered installing OpenStep 4.2 instead of NextStep? I can point you to where to 'acquire' OpenStep 4.2. I believe it's safe to say that OpenStep 4.2 is more compatible with more white hardware.

(I used to own that exact MB (ASUS P3C-2000) years ago, but it died. I had only used it for linux)

Okay, i'll try rawwrite on my PC (it has Windows ME)

And, yes, i actually wanted to go with OPENSTEP originally, but couldn't find it on ebay. But, i'll give nextstep a try, then keep you posted if i need openstep

Thanks to you all for your continuous support.

I used rawwrite to put the 3.3 drivers image to a floppy, and it loaded the core drivers, no problem. So i'm guessing the drivers disk i got with nextstep was bad (it's over 10 years old... i'm not surprised that it was damaged)

Anyway for about an hour, i was trying to figure out which driver to use for my CD drive. i used the 'beta drivers' disk for the HD, and it detected the HD okay, but not the CD drive. It asks for the root device when it gets to the Mach boot session.

What driver should/can i use?
My CD drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1302.

Thanks.

Since it is a DVD drive, you may have issues with it. Do you have a spare, plain, CD-ROM?
