When cleaning out the garage, you never know what you might find...

Note the top right connector, and a few other differences here and there...

Very cool. That first board is particularly interesting. Looks like they were testing the NBIC chip with those sockets. I wonder what the big socket is? Would be cool to see if it's possible to boot it with a standard ROM, or maybe the pre-release I uploaded?

It also looks like they were experimenting with connecting a modem from the DSP. I think I remember reading something about that in the newsgroups at one time.

And it even cooler (for me), you have confirmed the existence of the 20mhz cube! That has a 20mhz 68030.

The big socket is for one of the two big ASICS developed for the board. The 600310 part was done, and installed on this board. The 610313 wasn't ready yet. Much of the 'dead bug' wiring was done to explore problems around the 610313 early versions.

The NBIC(s) were planned as two parts at this stage. That obviously changed. Pin counts and packages...

There's no twisted pair Ethernet connector yet. You get 10Base2 10 Mbps, and you'll like it. Terminators in place, everyone! Yay, cheapernet!

The 56K ran code modules for modem use, including an ISDN version. Telecommute with your scientific workstation!

Are you going to try to get it working again?

No. I'd need to pull a working 610313 from another board, remove the existing science experiments, try to add in two years worth of patches in the multilayer board design, and it still would probably just catch on fire. Shocked

Some things are better left as is. There are plenty of 68030 boards that do boot out there. (I've got two that just tested out as fully functional.)

Fair enough. Thanks for sharing the pics and as always the back story.
