I have a couple of ADB 4000B monitors - the one with the plastic foot instead of the metal foot.

My understanding is that these came in both a non-ADB and ADB versions.

I would love to use these on my Cubes or mono slabs, but none of those are ADB.

So - some general questions for the collective:

Can these be converted to non-ADB by swapping out the interface board? If so, can the interface board come from a 4000/4000A monitor, or does the donor need to be a non-ADB 4000B?

Is turning a non-ADB slab into an ADB slab anything more that the ROM change, along with an appropriate ADB soundbox and cable?

Does the Turbo Cube support ADB peripherals? Here again, I assume it's more than a ROM change. It's unclear to me if the same ROM is used between the slab and the Cube, but that seems unlikely.

TIA for any advice!

The thread titled "NeXTstation Color Turbo - Did NeXT make one?" appears to have answers to most of my questions.

Apologies for not widening my search on appropriate terms before posting up.

But, if you have something to add here, please do Smile

Hello Scutboy: Yes you can convert a 4000B Monitor to non adb by swapping adb to the non adb soundcard ,

I have not tried it with a modded adb conversion card but best guess is it would work.

You can also swap motherboards on monostations to make it adb compatible by updating to a mono turbo motherboard , you also need the matching ADB Monitor cable .

To clarify:

The board from an N4000 monitor will not work.
The board from an N4000A or B monitor will work
The board from any soundbox will work.

The ADB board can also be modified directly to provide the nonADB interface, but if you go that route I would try to not modify the case since these are not common.

The ADB signal is handled internal to a custom NeXT ASIC. This is on pin 7 of the 19pin connector. Only turbo systems (NS, NS color, Cube) have the pin connected. The is no way to add ADB to earlier systems. In addition to the turbo chipset you require the appropriate ROM to make use of the chipset support.
