Thanks kindly for the offer, I figure you're right in that it's best to sell it and get a 3rd party, strange how your machine works OK, it's either down to the older firmware or different CPU/Cache type.
It would be intresting to compare bench marks on our machines to see if the cache actually make enough of a difference to care about.
I'd expect that all other things being equal or near abouts, your machine should best my machine (the dual 800) by at last 25%. I can bench my dual 1.4 Digital Audio as well and see how that compares against them both it should be 40% quicker than your dualie 1.0 and 75% quicker than my dualie 800. Maybe the lvl 3 cache does not make that much difference.
If you're intrested post the CPU & memory bench marks using the latest Xbench.
Cheers

OK I benchmarked my systems, from what I can tell, the lvl 3 cache does not do much, not purely be benchmarks alone anyway, perhaps pointing to the limitations of the 133mhz ram and sytem bus.
Here are the results of my dual 800 DA against a dual 800 QS. CPU and FPU are the same near as dammit, but of interest, I've noticed another oddity, the lvl 2 cache in the digital audio is running at 400mhz as opposed to the same CPU in a QS which runs it at 800mhz. I checked many machines and they are all running at 800mhz

I compared all my systems against what appears to be a dual 1ghz QuickSilver G4

Dual 1.4

Though not relevant I thought I'd throw it in for the hell of it
Mac mini (The Mac mini is running OS X Tiger Server 10.4.5)

I'd love to see the X bench results of your QS dual 1.0ghz CPU, I'd also like to know the lvl 2 cache speed.

Grrr I wish I liked the case design of the QS & MDD but I don't I much prefer the look of the old G4. |
I upgraded to Firmware Version 4.2.8 and it still reports the L3 cache. It must be something else with the motherboard that is enabling the cache. Bummer. Cheers. _________________ Patrick |

WOW, you took a bit of a risk, thanks for doing so and letting me know, I can rule that one out. The latest CPU Director 2.3b3 that came out yesterday makes no difference.
