Right now i'm trying to get color working on my old pentium 3 with ns 3.3. I've got a 8mb ati rage 98 xl and i'm trying to hunt down the right driver - so far all i've found are the ati rage drivers from apples support page but those dont seem to be working. according to the help file the driver is supposed to auto detect the card but i'm still stuck with b&w.

You may have to finagle the PCI identifier to get it to pick up.

I was writing something on how that works with regards to the Adaptec 2970 card....

But I've forgotten everything.

A quick advanced search on google groups will help. Smile Here's a few results that should get you going:

If it doesn't work out of th box, look into /usr/adm/messages
for a line like
Nov 27 12:41:57 nimrod mach: Found PCI 2.1 device: ID=0x47421002/0x00801002
at Dev=0 Func=0 Bus=1

(Bus=1 is AGP, numbers ending in "1002" denote ATI devices).

Put 0x47421002 (in this case) into the list of "Auto Detect IDs"
in Default.table in /private/Devices/ATIRageDisplayDriver.config/
(and into the files PCI*Mb.table too for cards with more than 2Mb)
using a text editor. Reconfigure the driver (remove an add it again).
Reboot.

Or:
Try to find the ID of your video card and write it down. Usually you can see
it at startup under your Bios informations among others PCI card. Its like
0x47421002 (this one is for my ATI 3D rage pro video card). Once in nextstep
launch Configure.app . Click on Screen icon and click on "expert" button.
Look at the right line where you should see an ID list . Insert the new ID
if not already in the list (it shouldnt) . restart the system. good luck

Basically, it comes down to watch the system on boot up or look @ the /usr/adm/messages file. You'll see the device that has the "1002" in it. Add it to the list in the auto-detect settings. Now, I will tell you that I was messing w/ an older x86 box a while back & it didn't like the ATI driver for some reason even after adding the device ID. So I ended up using the VESA driver. It worked fine. Hope that helps. Take care.

ok i paused bios while it was booting so i could read all the info:

Bus No. = 1
Device No. = 0
Func No. = 0
Vendor ID = 1002
Device ID = 474D
Device Class = Display Controller
IRQ = 11

punched 0x474D1002 into the id list in the configure app and... SUCCESS!

the default option was 8 bit so it looked like crap, after setting it to 32 bit it looks amazing! NeXTstep in all its glory (minus sound and networking..)

thanks for all the help!

b&w is ok, but 32bit depth is better!
