I don't mind admitting that I usually go to thrift stores in search of old computers/software, etc.

But today, I had a nearly tear-jerking experience.

To my surprise, on one of the shelves in the electronics area, sat a lonely NeXTSTATION Turbo, priced at $29, with a NeXT display with it!!

By this time I am excited and are smiling from ear to ear, as I see this as a chance to finally own some original NeXT hardware. A quick look around, and i locate a usable power cord, because I learned the hard way about buying thrift store computers without first testing them. Then, i rummage through and find the keyboard at the bottom of a bin full of old IBM keyboards. It looked like someone had spilled cranberry juice all over it because all the keycaps were sticky, and the keys wouldn't come back up when you hit them. The mouse was okay, it had some scruffs but it was usable.

I hooked all the stuff up, then a tap to the power button.

Now, this is where the sad stuff comes in.

I don't hear any noise from the machine, so i check all the cables, but everything's fine.

I press the power key down hard, thinking it's the sticky keyboard, but still nothing.

Now, I come to the conclusion that something is wrong on the inside, so I open it up with this screwdriver I found in the room, and what was revealed to me was a huge disappointment.

#1: The hard drive was replaced with a modern 250GB disk with some weird cable coming out of it that was soldered to the motherboard.

#2: The floppy drive had been removed

#3: The CPU wasn't the standard 68040, it had "CE374" stamped on it.
(I googled "CE374" and got nuthin')

And finally: there was a case light installed around the bottom, where there was a huge cut opening on the bottom.

After seeing the case lighting, it was obvious that whoever owned this, tried to restor-....MOD i should say a perfectly good computer, and failed. Then it was dumped in a thrift store.

I kinda didn't even want it after i saw the light on it like that!

Oh well.

It sounds like you found Dr Hannibol Lektor's NeXTStation. You don't want to know what that "Jam" was in the keyboard.

Well, at least he had a NeXT and not some Compaq, right?

I didn't buy it because it would be too hard to fix up. You know, finding a floppy drive for it, etc..

But I didn't think to take pictures of it.

The only mods I am in favor of involve adding stuff and replacing potentially failing parts. For example, replacing the 5.25" full-height hard drive with a modern 3.5" hard drive, replacing electrolytic capacitors, adding RAM (main and DSP), and others. Also, making a cable for an LCD panel or a reproduction sound box would be useful. I am not in favor of any mods that do irreparable damage to hardware.

I agree with you totally. And I would also only mod it if it NEEDED it. Not like those PC guys who do it to show off. Laughing
