During the installation of NEXTSTEP 3.3 on my Nextstation I ticked the "TeX and METAFONT" box using op a precious 12 MB of hard drive space. However when I type "latex" or "tex" at the terminal prompt nothing happens. Where can I find the installed files, is LaTeX included, and what would be the proper "NeXT" way to use the stuff?
(I'm already quite well acquainted with LaTeX having written various reports and my thesis in it.) |

I'll take a stab at answering this one, but I haven't been able to verify it on my NeXTStation. I did use LaTeX on NeXT back around 1994. I remember having to make the .tex file in emacs or your favorite editor. You could then compile and view it in TeXView.app. This should work on a plain-vanilla configuration.
But even back in 1994 the built-in LaTeX support was very obsolete, so I had to install a newer LaTeX distribution in /usr/local and do some configuration to make it all work. It also worked from the command line as I remember. I haven't played with LaTeX on NeXT since then. If you're looking to write a couple of articles, you should find the most recent distribution that will still work on NeXT and configure it to pre-empt the built-in distro. You can still use the viewer app with it as I remember.
Edit: Check out http://www.mathi.uni-heidelberg.de/~flight/stepTeX/ for more information on making TeX usable.
