when i bought my Macintosh Quadra 700 (25MHz 20MB ram 120MB HD) in 1991, the amount was huge,
but it was a great machine
NeXT's prices compare favorably to a similarly configured Macintosh Quadra

Quadra 700 ... a really nice machine!

It was the fastest Mac we had available in the department back then, and used it to do "3D" space filled molecular models. Ahh, the bad old days, or as my daughter puts it "When daddy used to be a scientist". Shocked

I just recently ended up with a Quadra 800 for $5. The plan is to replace the HDD and maybe do an A/UX 3.01 install.

RGB hi-res monitor
Apple Two-Page Monochrome Monitor
for backup : 650MB ram disk read/write at speed 1

mainly used for ArchiCAD v3 ( 3D CAD app ) and Photoshop
plotter : Houston DMPL A0 penplotter ( not pictured )

Thinking about your Atari example, I would say lower cost, longer run, more units sold = larger user base.
