Hello NeXT Community: I'm doing an install for a customer in South Korea . I have 2 versions of NeXTSTEP 3.3 Japanese ISO's one from FSCK archives and the other from the customer. Some where along the way , well it is missing a lot of packages so after the install preferences has changed to custom front end that doesn't seem very stable to me. I actually bought and sold the last originals from Apple circa 1999 and should have made backups.
I have had mixed results trying different methods to install that are tried true and tested with NeXTSTEP 3.3 , I thought I would do a simple install NeXTSTEP 3.2 and then upgrade to NeXTSTEP 3.3 Japanese but the NeXT upgrader bombs .  I actually have a working version moved from previous as that install seems to work and then dd the image to sd.  Build disk doesn't work. So someone has changed it enough where it is throwing errors or hanging boot after install , preferences disappears so you can't set a password for me , then log out and login as root for example.

I know having a clean copy of the original iso would let me figure out if this has been a mess from day one or the product of 20 plus years of installs and customization .  I know a lot of people would appreciate this as I think I can make a clean easy install possible again .

The first choice in the fresh install version on the 3.3 user is Japanese when it should be placed at the end of the available language choices as it offsets the legacy install procedure where english should install first in position 1:)
Having Japanese as choice one I supect causes a snowball effect ....

I'm thinking may be a Japanese language package would work much better where you install english first.
Then after setting root up install the custom Japanese package as it would probably work match the exisiting NeXT code architecture
of the existing language packages .
I'm going to also see if I can drop and drop lproject *everything Japanese from the 3.3 j iso/cd into a clean 3.3 original install.

Hopefully an original NeXTSTEP 3.3 ISO , User, dev and Y2k patch 1 manifests.

I'm Enjoying the challenge.

I've successfully made a Korean package ISO where it was formerly multiple folders on floppy :)

I think I have this in a software archive somewhere. I'll take a look if no one gets to it first.

Hello Brian: That would be great, I'm fairly sure there is no way the versions I'm using are completely original lol Steve would have gone postal! It is interesting as it looks like a pretty good attempt at replacing the NeXTSTEP front end preferences with a custom one tht toggles between 2 options and then the Korean fonts install on top of it . Perhaps because of the complexity of Kanji? I'm thinking the original NeXT version from 1994 is probably rock solid. I'll post on Facebok as well .Best Regards Rob Blessin

I'm pretty sure that I have everything you're looking for. it was an archive named "NeXTSTEP_collection_20111122.rar" I got from here: http://www.nextcube.org/board/browse/1116/4567

it seems the file is no longer available for download, but I still have it. also, you could try to download it from archive.org:

So this is the NS 3.3 Japanese version. Is there a separate one for OS4.2?

Rob Blessin Black Hole

Hello Zombie: Yes there is a separate one for Openstep 4.2 . So in the future Previous will be able to help as I will be able to upload my install drive image to the customer. I just emailed Youngsoo the thought is they will be able to test my install while I'm integrating there NeXT hardware. I will point them at lots of cool downloadable NeXT software so they can test out or create a virtual drive. The image can then be DD to an SD card that will be bootable on there NeXT to test it if I still have not shipped they can upload it back to me. So I'll be able to test it on there NeXT system as I can simply DD the image, I know this will work and be fun .... optionally I can have 2 codesrc Micro SD Cards , the master and the customer 2gb image I copy to the master sd.
I've also used this to rescue legacy data from a NeXT and copy it to an sd , then bring it up in Previous so all of their old NeXT stuff apps is now accessable on modern hardware :) Yes it works. I finishing up a clean NeXTSTEP 3.3 install J in previous so hopefully when I DD it to SD , it will boot up on the Cube and I will be able to ship .

Hi All, I'm trying to install 3.3 Japanese using the linked ISO images (upgrader 3.3J). After the installation I get an error message reading "Can't access user dictionary". Both with Previous and actual black hardware. Do you have any suggestion? I have the feeling the updater is assuming the dictionary is actually created by the plain installer. Does anyone have it by chance?

Does anybody knows if a 3.3J PA-RISC version ever existed?
