Here are benchmarks from my current Rig

Jetway 694TAS PIII 1.2 Ghz (soon to be 1.4)
960 Mb Ram
Adaptec 2940UW Pro Scsi
Sound Blaster AWE64
Smc 9332 PCI Ethernet

It's been educational learning about disktabs.. hosed a few installs..

Upgraded to PIII 1.4 Cpu

Disk Speed Index went up by 10... not bad.

Those are good results. I had a Tualatin back in the day and it worked so well I was able to put off buying a P4 for a long time.

Might as well post my Disktabs incase they can hep someone out. Caveat emptor..

You get better drive performance than I am getting under VirtualBox

Apple2guy

Could it be the Scsi controller? I wonder what the difference between an Adaptec 2940UW and a Adaptec 2940UW pro.

I am using an IDE controller on VirtualBox, have not tried SCSCI, but could be worth a try?

Apple2guy

It should work with Buslogic scsi..

Yep Buslogic Scsi works in Virtualbox.

It is smoking fast.....

I switched to it, but could not boot. I can add a second SCSI drive , which works fine (and seems fast). But I can not boot from a SCSI drive (just IDE). When I try to boot from SCSI ,
I am getting these errors on boot :
Can't open /dev/rhd0a
mount /dev/hd0a on / : No such device
mount: giving up on:
/

Apple2guy

You can't just switch the controller without reconfiguring Openstep. You need to remove the ide device and add the BusLogic pci scsi device before re configuring the virtual machine to be scsi. You want he HD to be SCSI 0 and the cdrom needs to be a higher id. I normally use id 6 or 15.

the mount /dev/hd0a means it is still configured to Loog for an ide boot device.
ide devices are /dev/hdxa /dev/rhdxa
scsi devices are /dev/sdxa /dev/rsdxa  (where x = device number starting at 0)

I did my install on a 2 gb image. Updated to patch 4 then used a custom disktab to partition a second larger scsi drive. Then I used dump to clone my boot drive to the second drive. Then I re-configured the second drive as the first. After that it will boot create a swap then reboot.

Thanks for the info. When you say IT is configured to for ide boot device, is there a configuration file? I did add the scsi controller (with no drives) to the VM, booted the VM, and added the SCSI driver (it was detected) in OPENSTEP, removed the ide driver in OPENSTEP, shut down the VM and then changed the drives to use the SCSI device in the VM config. I also removed the IDE controller in the VM. Still get the error about /dev/hd0a.

Apple2guy

Yes the bootloader that was installed to the image is configured to boot ide.
This article may help... https://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Docs/NeXTStep/3.3/nsa/09_StartShut.htmld/index.html

It may be easier to do a new install on scsi..

Ok, well I made a backup copy of my VM and thought I would try editing /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab, replacing them with sd0a instead of hd0a. Managed to boot up and login. Got much better numbers!

Only weird thing is at login there is a long pause of perhaps a minute or more before the Workspace Manager and Dock appears. I will keep looking as to what might be causing that long delay. I saw the log said Failure Setting Background Color, not sure if that is related. After you login and that pause , everything is much snappier though!
